There’s still lots of activity happening below the soil, with any newly planted trees and shrubs growing their root system, earthworms and microbes hard at work on the soil; there still plenty of tree and garden maintenance to do during these winter months.
By this time of year, a lot of the summer mulch will have already decayed leaving your trees and plants vulnerable to the colder climate. Protecting your plants and trees with a much needed new layer of mulch at the start of winter is critical as it will provide your garden with a much-needed protective layer. This layer of mulch ensures that the soil temperature remains even, and eliminates constant sharp variations in temperature; from cold to warm. It’s these massive shifts in temperatures that take a toll on your plants. You’ll need to make sure you’ve thoroughly watered the area before mulching to help preserve some moisture.
It’s recommended that you check your garden doesn’t have any drainage issues, some issues can be corrected by simply using a garden fork to create vertical holes to drain away excess water in garden beds. Potted plants will require less water; as will most of the plants in your garden. Protect any plants that are vulnerable to the cold or frosts by using frames with a piece of cloth or plastic to cover them overnight to help to protect them from those extreme cold bites, do remembering to remove these in the morning. Tidy up your plants by removing the dead plant debris such as stems and foliage; this activity helps to prevent them harbouring diseases and insect eggs throughout winter.
There’s lots of preparation you can do during winter which you’ll see the benefits of come springtime. A couple of tips include aerating your lawn to let moisture into the soil, ready for fertilising and rejuvenating the lawn come spring. If you have a vegetable patch – as well as planting winter crops, get the vegetable patch ready for spring planting, eliminate any weeds from your garden beds to stop rapid growth come spring, and by planting shrubs now helps them to establish their roots before spring growth.
While you may not be as active as during the spring and summer months, as illustrated there is still lots to keep a gardener busy during the winter months. It’s important that you prepare the winter garden to both survive the cooler weather, as well as for the following growth in the spring months.
